I have to imagine you are talking about "knockers" or the old direct 'commission' based door to door sales consultant working at the bottom end of the food chain like what maybe found in insurance, double glazing oh sorry domestic or residential window replacement market, wall coating, not forgetting energy industry and building industries where there are many friendly sort of jolly naughty boys.

From now, not to recent history in developing lead generation tools for some of these industries, many regarded the recruitment process as lead generation where as part of the interview process prospective 'sales consultants' had to come up with a list of at least 100 friends, family, relatives and others to start with and or produce at least 10 appointments out of every 100 doors knocked - simples.

Of course, the employer got cheep leads that could be reworked after individual left after a few weeks to three months a lot poorer but wiser from the experience or wealthier and a stronger closer have sold to friends and relatives.

One used to consider retaining 1 in 3, longer than three months, a good result and if 1 in 3 of those produced the goods consistantly over months or upto three years they would find themselves group, regional and/or area managers very soon.

But, you are right it is but a numbers game from the field sales to call centers and I should maybe start historically within your field of operations benchmarking your own performance perhaps making sure you chase up lost souls and complete an exit survey of the recently departed if gone to quickly to do an exit interview ?. Recently i wrote dissertation on labour turnover,it was very interesting experience to me.i put all of these points in to this.

Perhaps someone within the direct sales associations would help with anecdotal info if you cannot find direct data and/or someone else may come up with a source - good luck ?
