    Default Q2 Plz Help

an investigation into the relationship between two variables gives a correlation coefficient of 0.97.

which of the following statements reflects the relationship between the two variables?

    1) an increase in 1 variable will be accompanied by a decrease in the other variable.
    2) there is no relationship between the two variables
    3) there is a relationship between the 2 variables but it is insignificant
    4) an increase in one variable will accompany an increase in the other variable.

Given: correlation co-efficient, r = 0.97. Conclusion: strong, positive, linear relationship.

An analysis of the 4 solutions:

    1) an increase in 1 variable will be accompanied by a decrease in the other variable. => it is a positive relationship, hence no.
    2) there is no relationship between the two variables => if no r'ship, r should be 0, hence no
    3) there is a relationship between the 2 variables but it is insignificant => 0.97 is a very strong relation, hence no.
    4) an increase in one variable will accompany an increase in the other variable. => by elimination this should be the answer. final assessment: yes, due to positive relationship
