Easy way to remember Belbin's team roles

Hi everyone,

Belbin’s team roles theory is one of the topics covered in the F1 - Accountant in Business syllabus. The theory identifies nine different types of “team roles” individuals can play when they are a part of a group.

These roles are Shaper, Implementer, Completer Finisher, Coordinator, Teamworker, Resource Investigator, Plant, Monitor Evaluator and Specialist.

An easy way to remember all nine of these roles is to use the mnemonic:

You are absolutely correct Rizwan. It’s not only important to remember the names of these team roles but also the meaning and characteristics of each.

Given above is just the mnemonic to remember the names of nine team roles. The names themselves represent the behaviour patterns of each role. So once you understand the logic and relate the name with its character, it will be easy to remember meaning of each.

In actuality most individuals will have a mixture of these roles with some roles being dominant and some being sub dominant.

A typical exam quesiton has Belbin's roles given. You will have to distinguish which role the exam quesiton is refering to.


Examples-

Finisher - ensures timetables are met

Monitor evaluator- criticises thers peoples ideas

Shaper - promotes activites

Team worker - supportive and tries to diffuse conflict

The nine clusters or team roles can also be grouped as follows:
1).Action-oriented roles: SHAPER
IMPLEMENTER
COMPLETER/FINISHER
2).People-oriented roles: CO-ORDINATOR
TEAM WORKER
RESOURCE INVESTIGATOR
3).Cerebral-oriented roles: PLANT
MONITOR/EVALUATOR
SPECIALIST
