View Full Version : How to Pass F5?
friends
i went through differents forums. what i found was suprising, students who scored in 70s and 80s in rest of the papers, were only able score in 50s in f5. infact the global pass rate of f5 is around 33%. can any one suggest why is it so? and considering me an average student pls suggest some very useful tips to on how to manage f5.
regards
I am also really concern regarding the passing rate. I've been studying for what i've been lost in class! Hopefully i'll see the path of light as I revise

Hi, Asif & okasha
I have gone through your posts - both of you are facing more or less the same difficulties. F5 is really a very interesting subject (e.g. just like science people like physics, similarly, finance people are interested in performance management).
But F5 (Performance management) requires more practice because it is almost 60% practical and 40% theory. In some cases the theory is based on practical problems. But it requires more practice to solve the problems and only then can you solve exam questions (all problems are decision making / real life examples / management decisions etc.).
Understanding concepts is crucial to F5
Wishing you all the best for your studies

When I was study F5 I feel it is quite paper, especial when I completed mock exam paper, I got 76%, I think I will pass it with high result. However, in the real exam, I confuse with the exam paper, especial for Question3(a variance question, but most are writing). When I finished exam I feel I was wrong to think it is an easy paper. In the end I got fail mark with 47, I think this time I need spend more time on this paper.
good luck to everyone
Hi all,
I've just started studing F5 and I'm finding it quite interesting, maybe it's cos I studied F2 in depth. Don't study it for the sake of passing your exam, study it for the knowledge purpose.

Hi Vitz,
It is true. I agree with Vitz. When you have studied F2 in detail, then F5 is little bit easy to understand. F5 concepts need to be understood clearly to make use of them in further practice.
For practical problems, you need to practice as many questions as possible for you. You need to understand the concepts before you get used to the methodology of solving these questions.
Practice makes you perfect. Hence, practice and practice.
And whenever you face any difficulties, let us know.
We are here to help you, in any way we can.
Wish you all the best

At begin of this paper, you will feel very similar as F2, but in the later party of this paper, become much difficult. I got one of my classmate who got 87 mark in F2 external exam, but last time only get 39 for F5. It's a difficult mamagement accounting paper, expecial for lots of writing.

My dear friend, why are you sweating over others scores? Do you know what their studing strategy was? Maybe they studied well for F2 and not for F5. Maybe in F2 they just focused on the completion of the revision kits which is more than enough for passing a CBT whereas in F5 the situation is totally different. Friend, let me assure you one thing, if you've studied thoroughly, you've practised a lot questions, you've studied every thing conceptually then you don't have to worry about any thing. Hard work brings good luck. This is true. The more you practise the more is the chance of passing your paper. Read the chapter first, if you don't understand any point, read it again and don't move any further unless and until the point is cleared to you. Make summary of the chapter in bullets form and revise them on and off. Then solve all examples, for practising purpose change the data and solve it. Once you're satisfied, do the questions provided in the questions bank/kits. Above of all revision is a must. Revise on regular basis. This is a key to success.
Nothing is impossible or difficult. Just a right strategy and har work is required and that's it :)
All the very best!

Hi all,
Vitz is right about the strategy you should adopt for studying F5.
Passing F5 depends upon how well you understand the subject and how you demonstrate your knowledge in your answers. Regular practice & revision is very important and will increase your confidence regarding the F5 paper.
If you are doing self-study, you can refer to other authors’ reference books to clarify the concepts. These will give you more questions & examples for practice.
All the best!!!!

hello
study techniques given by Vitz is perfect,
BPP text ---1 question from Part B- Decision Makin Techniques
& 1 Question fromPart E-Performance measuremant and control
des 2 parts have always great scope to be examine and this has been printed in Students Accountant magazine tooo.
Rest Part C -Budgeting- is 90% theory so i dont think it should be a problem fot anyone.
Part D - Standard Costing - is 90% is from F2 which was easy and i dont think is forgetable topic.
Part A is something which doesnt need much of head cracking
rest all u have to do is practice n practice. If any doubts come we are always ready to help u out. FOCUS ON TIME MANAGEMENT (nearly 3 months in hand)
best of luck to every1 :)
take care
which book is the author's reference book ?
I am determined to pass f5, I don't see why I cannot if I study all of my bpp textbook and practice mock exam papers. Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic, but why not? Lol, better than crying over it being too difficult.

This is my second time around for F5 also, I spent alot of time trying to master all the variances because I only had 1 month and a half left to study after doing an operation but in the exam alot of theory came and that really throw me off, so I guess I learnt my lesson..here we go again

hey,,,
i failed F5 and i got only 44 marks. This is so unfair (Sorry for that word). i studied like nothing. But finally i failed.
I went though lot of posts and it seems like F5 is very hard to pass in the 1st time. So i m forcing my self to believe that no 1 can pass F5 at their first try. lol
Anyway i m so depressed.
But gonna do better in the next time.

Hi,
As I am a new member and I think I should not disturb you. Well I recently gave 3 papers F6,F7 and F8 and I cleared all three papers in first attempt. Well guys I always use *** or *** text, just tell me how good GTG text as compared to these mentioned texts. Guys now I am going to take F5 please guide me about this crucial subject. Well my analysis says this paper is hard to pass because it is more conceptual paper. In F2 you are basically focusing on calculations rather than interpretation, in this paper more interpretation is assessed as compared to calculation and I think on this stage more professional comments are expected by examiner. Therefore as per my analysis this paper require more smart working than hard working means focus on comments rather than calculation because it was already assessed in F2. Guys if you think I am wrong please let me know because I am going to appear in this paper.

The pass percentage of F5 is around 28 % this time..
It's really scary to know that in the subject you are attempting only 28 out of 100 are gonna pass....Please share some tips ..Secrets for this subject.
It's really getting in my nerves.
Thanks

Hi,
I have just read examiner's feedback , it is really very interesting giving the reasons why students couldn't manage to pass F5:
1. Poor time management
2. Ignoring the number of marks allocated to certain sections
3. The layout of answers were mixed
4. Lack of knowing discursive elements
You can check the complete feedback here:

Hi,
First of all relax. F5 is not that much difficult. It is mainly based on costing concepts. Which book you are referring right now?
I advise you to purchase GTG books, because it has covered the entire syllabus in a simple and easy language. After completing each section, revise it carefully. Go through Keynotes and synopsis of that topic. Try to solve more and more past exam questions.
By learning in a smart way, you will definitely pass Paper F5.
All the bests
Hi Friends,
I've been really inspired by your great contributions, the problem i still face is the ease with which i forget the concepts in F5. At the time of study, i really understand them but tend to forget as soon as i drop my notes!!. Can anyone in the house give me tips on how to overcome this issue? Hope to hear from you soonest and good luck to all.
It happens with many of the students that while reading they understand thoroughly but while answering the same topic, they either forgot or get confused.
I would like to suggest you to prepare your own notes. While referring Study Text, highlight or underline some important concepts and note down them in your own note-book. Writing is the best practice of learning. It helps in improving hand writing, increasing consistency (i.e. writing speed) and concentrating mind.
Revise each and every topic after some regular intervals. Solve question bank by your own and compare your answers with the given one.
All the bests

I think f5 is tricky because during the mock and practise seesions I cope well with the paper but the last exam caught me out mostly because it required so much detail and I really felt as if the time was not sufficient. So practise and practise your speed as well.

hi people...
yes. F5 is difficult as F5 do really test us on the application skills and it prepares for those who are planning to take P5 Advance Performance Management paper in future.
The best way to pass the paper is by doing lots and lots of question and try to understand the principles of the costing methods. Therefore, it would be a great help to you. Full time students should get their lecturers to mark their assignment on the time test basis. This way would ease the time pressure, plan and manage to answer the question on time.
For those who are doing self study, try to get someone who could mentor you if possible as application skills is important for that paper. Even the examiner himself had said so LOL!!
Part-time students should make use of their working experience as they could benefit it when writing on their exam booklets.
All the best people!!

Apparently the low pass rates is largely due to foreign speaking students having difficulty with the language in the F5 questions.
I would tend to agree as there is lots of text in F5 questions. If you do not understand what is being given to you, then you will be under real pressure as it is a technical subject. They will not give you a piece of information unless it is needed to solve in the solution.
out teacher always says the only diff between F2 AND F5 is that in F5 you need to expand on the calculations, you need to understand what for example an negatiVe mix variance means to a company rather than just providing a figure like you would do in F2.
f2 is largely calculations where as f5 has 15marks out of every25 marks for expansion on figures.
you wont pass F5 by just getting the calcs right. this is where people fall down also.
