View Full Version : Those preparing for F4 now
Hello,
As you are preparing for F4 now, here are some important tips.
1) You have ample time in hand, so cover all aspects of the syllabus. See December 2007 exam, there was a question on clauses of memorandum of association which many students felt was unexpected.
2) Some topics are extremely important from examination point of view for eg. Law of contract. So you need to focus on these topics. But at the same time, it is impossible to predict which topics will not be examined! So better learn everything.
3) Study the scenario based questions from past exams and develop a habit of analysing the given scenario. And slowly you will reach near to the level of analysis expected by the examiners!
And above all, we are here to help you in all possible ways. Do write us for you difficulties.
All the best!

Thanks for the useful information. I very much agree that analytical power is very important!!!!
F4 would be fun studying and may get boring too when you will reach the end chapters.
What happens is that when students get hold of there F4 Book and they see all the legal language and stuff and cases so they start to feel as if they are lawyers ( same happened with me)
Remember , when you are studying , you are not an lawyer standing in court but a student giving ACCA Exams which is far away from being a lawyer. So you have to answer the questions as a student and show you understanding rather then to show how legal can you get!
F4 is not that hard as many things seem logical .

Congratulations! On clearing the F1 ! I think you can buy F4 now as all syllabus changes are already done and things wont be changing that quickly.
Best to be safe , make sure you rely on the authors reply.

I m more mathmatical and logical then verbal.
Lets seee what hapen
Hello Vishwas,
Acid has rightly said that changes in the F4 syllabus are already covered in the F4 study material. Still my suggestion is wait for some time for buying the F4 books, as we would perhaps introduce an updated version of F4 books.
So, for some days, focus on F2 and F3 studies.

May i know if its is a must to memorise all the case name? Just while you are attempting the question, you will apply the case into it. If yes, any easy method to memorise?
Hi Coyete,
Yes, there are many cases in F4 and it is difficult to remember names of all cases. I will suggest you to rRead the past paper answers and you will be able to identify important cases. Ensure you know all the points, including the cases mentioned and the detail with which they are mentioned.
Also, you will find most of the scenario based questions similar to several cases. You need to be able to identify which case is relevant and explain the basics of that case.
Am enclosing Acid’s quote on this forum which might help you:
Hi guys,
You will come across hundreds of CASES in the F4. You will have to understand the point establised in case law and also you will have to learn the case names .
Do not commit the mistake of thinking that I'll list all the case names on a paper in a list form and then remember at the end of revision. This will take you no where except saddness in the examination day.
You should keep reviewing cases time by time and during your examination , you will automatically figure out which case was related to which chapter what are its contents. Our brain is a wonderful creation of a mastermind.
So , Review is better then rotting.
Best of luck with your studies!
Acid
Hope this will help you! Acid has cleared F4 paper. So it is very helpful to follow his advice.
All the best!

I am sitting this for the 3rd time in Dec. So am bricking it, as I thought I'd done enough last time, and didn't. This time, I don't feel as confident.
Good luck to everyone sitting F4.

Dear
Please can anyone explain me the difference between case law and common law and statute law and civil law
Thanks in advance
Ravinee
Hello,
Common law is based on past practices and customs. It refers to the substantive law and procedural rules created by the judicatory through the various cases heard by them.
Case law is the law formed on the basis of precedents. It gets refined in the course of judicial decisions.
Case law is the law which originates by decisions of the court as opposed to the statues (legislature passed in the parliament).
A statute is a formal, written law enacted by a legislative authority e.g. the parliament.
There are two types of law: Civil and criminal.
Civil law is the law dealing with disputes between individuals and/or organisations. It governs the relationship between private individuals. It tries to compensate the victims usually through financial compensation for the damage they have suffered.
Criminal law on the other hand punishes people for the wrongful acts done by them. It focuses on punishing the accused and not compensating the victims of the crime.
I hope this solves your query.

You dont need to memorise the cases.
just undertand the case and know how to relate it to the question at hand.
you can try and make notes of the sub topics and each case name stated.
once you remember the topic, you will remember the case, once you remember the case you will remember the content.
all the best

if you cannot remember the name of the case exactly, it is better to refer to it as "in a decided case" and than state the content and the principle

Do you have any quick points to ponder for the F4 paper?
I agree whole heartedly with Acid. Its never to early to start studying and as F4 is a lengthy wordy paper as much practice at examples, exam questions etc will ensure that you know the subject inside out and will feel confident when June comes.
Good luck
