Miss Beijing an employee of Olympics Co expressed concern about the compliance of safety on one of the public stands. She raised the issue with her immediate supervisor but who did not respond because he was the one who recommended the contactor and had a long standing personal relationship with the latter. When she failed to obtain a response from him, she decided to report the lack of compliance to the press.
The public stands had to comply with the international standard on safety and was required to withstand weights above 1000kg. Olympics Co was allowing the contractors to use materials that would only allow 500kg.
Miss Beijing told the press that there was carelessness in Olympics.

Explain the ethical responsibilities of a professional accountant both as an employee and as a professional

Profession is an occupation requiring special training. The primary duty of a professional is to public interest rather than the organisation.

As an employee Miss Beijing is answerable to her seniors and accountable to the shareholders. She is employed by Olympics and owes a duty to her employers. She is a responsible and probably has a family to look after so she should maintain a cordial relationship with her superior.

Professionalism

This is avoidance of any act that will discredit the accountancy profession. Accountants are bound by code of ethics i.e Integrity, Objectivity, Professional competence and due care.
One should also maintain confidentiality whilst putting in mind that they should take action to support the public interest

As a professional, Miss Beijing should maintain high professional and ethical standards and comply with ethical or professional code. She should be concerned about the accident that may occur if the stands are not able to withstand the weights.. However, her decision should be channelled through the right channels before going to the press. She owes a duty of confidentiality to Olympics. But she must not keep quiet because that will make her party to the wrong thing
