Inclusive in the course fee is the official ICAEW materials for the Case Study examination as well as materials for the other advanced level papers. This is because much of the Case Study involves prior knowledge from the other advanced level papers, so it will be advisable for ICAI members to go through this prior to the course commencement.
GTG will also provide summary notes and revision aids to assist ICAI members further.
Please note, the Case Study examination is an open book examination. This means that other books can be taken into the examination room within reason (space restraints). This means that ICAI members may choose to purchase other texts that they believe will assist them in the final examination.
The ICAEW Advanced Case Study examination is like no other examination you will have ever taken. It seeks to mimic real life and the advanced information (60 pages) is made up of a number of separate exhibits including reports, emails, memos and general information. On the day of the examination you will be given some additional information and requirements. It is absolutely essential that you understand how to sift through the information, use it and adjust it to the client’s needs, within the 4 hours that you have. The GTG course has been designed exclusively for ICAI members and therefore will focus on the areas that they are likely to find challenging.
More information is given in the section on the GTG study programme
There is no doubt that the Case Study is extremely challenging and will take a lot of preparation time. However, the rewards are huge and you will find yourself being able to tackle tasks more efficiently and effectively after passing this examination.
Prior to coming on phase 1 of the course, you will be required to have done approximately 20 – 30 hours of reading.
On Phase 1, you will be expected to be in the classroom from 9am to 6.30pm (sometimes later) each day and there may be some homework set.
After Phase 1 you will be required to review what has been learnt and in addition complete at least 1 mock case study which should be submitted to GTG for marking.
Phase 2 will be run in a similar way to Phase 1.
After Phase 2, prior to the real examination you will be expected to study and research the pre-seen material for at least 16-20 hours.
Please remember that the Case Study is the culmination of the ICAEW examination system. It requires knowledge from other advanced and knowledge level papers. This means that you may need to up-skill yourself on various areas, eg IFRS, International Auditing standards, Business Strategy, financial analysis and other topics
